Program Notes
A letter from the Producer

Welcome!

The Prom is such an important story in 2023.  Quince is proud to welcome people from every aspect of life.  The story is filled with the highest highs and lowest lows, it captivates and tugs at the heartstrings.  Watching the show come together has been so breathtaking.  It is hard to imagine this all working out in June, but here we are.

Holding the position of producer for the second year in a row, first time solo, has had its twists and turns but nonetheless has proved worth my effort.  The people I get to reconnect with as well as the new friends I make, fills my heart.  I, Michaelyn Akgulian (20), have found a home in theater after being introduced to it two years ago.  I am extremely fulfilled at Quince, the people who support me are truly one in a million.  Taking this position solo was scary at first but learning how to be a leader on my own has benefited me in so many more areas.  I finished my second year at UW-Milwaukee in Biomedical Sciences, completely different than theater, but found that being a leader comes more naturally.  PQPC has allowed me to organize and use my time more efficiently.  I have worked my absolute hardest for this company and I am proud of what was made.

This summer has been a huge learning curve for us all and I couldn't be more thankful for the people I have worked with to help make this come alive for you all to see.  Our general director Ash has always been one step ahead with a clear vision.  Choreographer Sophia has been the absolute best at taking criticism and using it to the cast’s advantage.  Our choral team of Marley and Noah took a bunch of people and made them sound like they have been working together for years.  Our tech team of Nick and Noah have brought sketches into reality.  Finally, our pit directors, Kalina and Joey assisted by Justin; this show would be nothing without the stunning music each day.  The music was challenging but seemed almost easy for them!

I owe the biggest thank you to the cast and pit for putting up with me and my mess.  This show is absolutely stunning.  So many people look up to you all and I could not be more proud to see the show all together.  A company purely run by 12-23 year olds is unfathomable, but we did it for 55 years now, let the youth of Manitowoc continue the legacy.

I must list an extra special thank you to my family.  My mother for supporting quince as much as possible and my father for donating the scripts.  Additionally, my sister who dragged me here in the first place.  Kalina has had my back through it all, I am so proud of all she does.

Finally, to my Grandpa Tony, I appreciate you always listening about theater stuff during our visits.  I miss you.

Thank you to all who came to see The Prom.  There are heaps of love poured into this performance.  I hope you appreciate it all.

Yours in Quince,
Michaelyn Akgulian

A Letter from the General Director
Ladies, gentlemen, and fellow theatre enthusiasts, thank you and welcome to The Prom! Words cannot express how honored I am to be able to bring this show to life for you all to see. When I was first elected to be Quince’s General Director, I had no clue what shows would even be on the ballot. As the season went on I grew more and more attached to this show and when it officially became our chosen show for the season I quite literally leapt with excitement. I have been working diligently on this show for many months now and with each passing month I have only felt more and more pride for this wonderful team of people and all the hard work that has gone into making this show possible.

I will be the first to admit that this show is a bit ‘off-brand’ for Quince. However, I believe that is what makes it even more special. The Prom is a show that checks all of the boxes for me. There are teenagers in love, highschool bullies, journeys of self discovery, struggling parent-child relationships, and of course plenty of room for laughter. This show really speaks to a lot of people because there are so many real, relatable plot points. I mean who hasn’t stood alone in a crowded school hallway or sat in bed eating ice cream when something’s wrong. I think the thing I fell in love with the most about this show is that it is so unapologetically truthful. This show has nothing to hide. It shows the raw feelings and emotions behind each and every character. From Alyssa struggling to stand her ground, to Emma’s ‘unruly heart’, there is real, unapologetic emotion coursing through every piece of this show.

This show would not have been possible without a whole host of people. A huge shout-out to the many people who helped me keep my head on straight this summer. Sophie, my partner-in-crime choreographer, Marley, our vocals extraordinaire, Noah (Mr. jack of all trades), the other half of our dynamic choral team as well as our representative tech guy, Joey and Kalina, our co- masters of the pit; and of course this list could never be complete without a huge thank you to woman who has kept us all sane, Producer Michaelyn. There are so many more people I could thank; our pit, hair and makeup team, props master, costumes, stage crew, tech crew, the list of people who have put their heart and soul into this show is endless. Lastly and most importantly, I would like to thank my wonderful cast for all of their hard work and for doing this show justice. As of opening night, this show is no longer mine, it is theirs. So, I invite you to sit back and let this wonderful group of young people show you that ‘tonight belongs to us’.

Thank you and I hope you enjoy PQPC’s production of ‘The Prom’.
