Program Notes
A letter from the Producer

Ladies, Gentlemen, lovers of the arts, it is an honor and a privilege to welcome you here tonight.
This Season as Producer might just be the most interesting of my Quince experiences. As a producer, you oversee everything. You keep track of what everyone is doing, solve everyone's problems, make sure everyone is on task and basically act as three separate people at times. After this experience, I certainly have an increased appreciation for all the work people do behind the scenes that actors ever really get to see. Now, to say that I never got frustrated or overwhelmed would be a bold-faced lie; but to say I wasn't constantly learning throughout every step of the process would be a bigger one.
Being on staff for Quince has taught me many things over the years: how to write up a budget, the importance of reading things all the way through, and the amount of effort it takes to get 30 teenagers to be quiet for longer than 5 minutes. Most importantly, Quince has taught me the significance of collaboration. Everything you see here today results from countless hours of work from an army of people coming together, who all bring something different to the table, Choreographer Sophie somehow always has enough energy to power a small village. Choral Director Marley is excellent at advocating for our actors' vocal health. Pit Director Rori, whose job I could absolutely never do, makes sure her pit feels heard and supported at all times, Technical Director Noah always brings the, "No worries, we got this" attitude when the reset of us are overwhelmed. And of course, our amazing General Director, May, brought everyone together to create this work of art making sure to check in on our mental health every step of the way.
The list of people who made this summer possible goes on and on: Stage crew, tech crew, hair and makeup, costumes, props, and of course or lovely pit and cast. Quince would not exist without all of these people coming together year after year to take on new challenges together. As Jennifer Brodtke wrote, "To everyone who believes I give you the utmost credit; for all those who dare to Dream, there is Quince". Quince is a beautiful dream that has lived on for 56 years thanks to generations of grit and determination to, "keep the dream alive!". I was lucky enough to see Quince at 50 years old and I can only hope to be able to see it at 100.
One final message to all future Quincers who might look back on this program one day: When people try to bring you down or diminish your worth, don't let them. Only you hold the power to forger your own future. So stand tall, keep your head up high, and never stop dreaming!
Yours in Quince,
Ash Stokes

A letter from the General Director

Hello and welcome to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!
For a company that emphasizes the power of dreams as a key part of its mission and legacy, I’m quite surprised that we took this long to choose Joseph. It may be the story of just one boy with a lucky streak, but it is also a story that emphasizes how all individuals are powerful in their own right and how their dreams can all come true. Such a beautiful sentiment that aligns so perfectly with a company that pushes young people to try, to believe in their own worth, and to learn and grow. All these things are easy to preach, but very, very difficult to execute alone.
As I remain ever self-doubtful, the question of “Is all of this worth it?” keeps popping up in my head, each time quickly answered with a “Yes, of course it is,” simply because there is always a dream in Quince that exists beyond the final product onstage. It manifests in the laughter shared by our cast and pit on many sweaty summer nights. It flourishes in midnight conversations and connections between friends that last through each season and beyond. It thrums with life in music-making and the joy of being recognized. The point of Quince is that we don’t have to do all our believing, trying, and growing alone; we have each other. The Dream roots itself in the promise that this spirit of Quince, of togetherness, goes on.
What you will see on stage tonight is the product of very many young people’s hard work and talent after a whirlwind season of preparation. I extend a special thanks to Ash, our most knowledgeable producer and my personal anchor to sanity; to Marley, for bringing our cast together in harmony and in laughter; to Sophie, for making sure we all know our worth; to Noah, for his many skills and steadfastness; and to Rori for her exceptional preparation and hard work in giving the score a living soul and beating heart. From our outstanding technical team, to our hardworking cast, beautiful pit orchestra, Executive Board, and Directing Staff, many individuals have come together to bring this colorful show to fruition. Please read through this program and let no one be overlooked, for every one of those names is a person with achievements and potential who is Keeping the Dream Alive through Quince.

Yours in Quince,
May Heili
